Williams Lauded for Iconic Image of Lawmakers Taking Cover in the Gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives on Capitol Hill During Jan. 6th Insurrection
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Wednesday, February 16, 2022 – FiscalNote, a leading technology provider of global policy and market intelligence, today salutes veteran CQ Roll Call photojournalist Tom Williams for being recognized as a Finalist in the Spot News category for photography by Pictures of the Year International, a global organization which honors photojournalists working in all mediums and across all platforms.
Williams was one of only three photographers named in the Finalist category for Spot News for the 79th annual POYi awards competition. Spot News is described by POY as “single photographs of breaking news or events in which no planning was possible.”
“I congratulate Tom for this well-earned and well-deserved recognition. For 22 years, the readers of Roll Call have had a front-row seat to history through his eyes, and on January 6, 2021, Tom bravely told a story that leaves an indelible mark on anyone who sees this photo,” said Catalina Camia, editor-in-chief of CQ Roll Call. “As the Capitol was under attack and one of the most recognized symbols of democracy was being breached, Tom demonstrated courage and resolve to tell the story of the panic and fear unfolding inside the House chamber.”
Williams recently recounted his experiences of that fateful day for a story he co-authored and published in Roll Call on the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6th attack. He described the events leading up to his photo in vivid terms:
