CQ and Roll Call Journalists Receive Dateline Awards

WASHINGTON, DC – June 25, 2021 – FiscalNote, a leading technology provider of global policy and market intelligence, congratulated two CQ and Roll Call journalists, who were recipients of Dateline Awards for Column Writing from the Society of Professional Journalists. 

Andrew Clevenger (left) and Mary C. Curtis (right) were honored by SPJ’s Washington, D.C., Pro Chapter. Awards were presented for excellence in TV, radio, newspaper, magazine, newsletter/trade publication, and online journalism, encompassing breaking news, business writing, commentary, photography, and more. All work was published or broadcast in 2020.

“The columns by Andrew and Mary are sharply focused, thought-provoking and insightful,” said Catalina Camia, editor-in-chief of CQ and Roll Call. “I’m pleased they were honored for their work alongside so many excellent journalists.”

Clevenger won in the Commentary and Criticism category (Magazine Division) for his “Common Defense” columns that first appeared in CQ Magazine. He covers defense policy for CQ and Roll Call, focusing on the intersection of Pentagon and Capitol Hill. Clevenger’s previous awards include the 2020 Dateline Awards for Journalism Excellence, the Military Reporters and Editors Journalism Award, and the SPJ Northwest Excellence in Journalism award.

Curtis is a columnist for Roll Call and host of the 'Equal Time' podcast. She won in the Editorial and Opinion category (Online Division) for a selection of her Roll Call columns. She is known for her unique voice and sharply focused eye. Her coverage specialty is the intersection of politics, culture and race.

The judging for the contest was conducted by members of the Society of Professional Journalists – Keystone Chapter, in a judging exchange with SPJ DC Pro. The full list of winners and finalists is on the 2021 Dateline Awards website.
