CQ Roll Call Journalist John Donnelly Receives Prestigious Recognition from National Press Club
Donnelly wins the Honorable Mention citation for the Michael A. Dornheim Award for excellence in reporting on military issues
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Thursday, December 16, 2021 – FiscalNote, a leading technology provider of global policy and market intelligence, today salutes CQ Roll Call journalist John M. Donnelly for his Honorable Mention citation for the 2021 Michael A. Dornheim Award, which recognizes the best journalism covering aviation, aerospace, and defense.
Donnelly was the recipient of the prestigious Dornheim Award, given by the National Press Club, in 2018.
“John Donnelly is simply one of the best journalists in Washington on the national security beat and one of the most knowledgeable about the Defense Department,” said Catalina Camia, editor-in-chief of CQ Roll Call. “He holds the powerful accountable and his journalism exposes themes that deserve debate and scrutiny. I join everyone in our newsroom in congratulating John and all the National Press Club winners.”
For the 2021 contest, Donnelly’s entry of stories published last year on the CQ and Roll Call websites centered on the behind-the-scenes debate over America’s nuclear weapons. His reporting revealed sharp-elbowed jockeying for power over billions of dollars in federal spending.
This is the third time the CQ and Roll Call teams have been recognized in 2021 for their excellence in journalism. In July, Mary C. Curtis, Roll Call columnist and host of the Equal Time podcast, won two Clarion awards from the Association for Women in Communications. Prior to that, Andrew Clevenger, CQ Roll Call defense policy reporter, and Curtis were presented with Dateline Awards by the Society of Professional Journalists’ Washington, D.C., Pro Chapter.
John Donnelly’s winning stories, as featured on the Roll Call website, include:
"Undisclosed Delays Plague Atomic Programs, Cost Billions to Fix” (3/19/20)
“Defense Bill Would Give Pentagon Power Over Energy’s Nuclear Arms Budget” (6/30/20)
“Congress Moves to Give Pentagon More Say in Energy Department’s Nukes Budget” (12/7/20)
The National Press Club's awards event will be held online on Jan. 6, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. The program will be streamed on press.org and on YouTube.
